The SLG will host an informal brunch followed by a private view of our major group exhibition, Lagos, Peckham, Repeat: Pilgrimage to the Lakes. With an introduction from South London Gallery Director, Margot Heller and Head of Programme, Sarah Allen.

Known as ‘Little Lagos’, Peckham is home to one of the largest Nigerian diaspora communities in the UK. Lagos, Peckham, Repeat: Pilgrimage to the Lakes looks at the connections between Lagos in Nigeria and Peckham in south east London.

The exhibition highlights the relationships, culture, shared history, communities and art that link the two places. Themes explored include transnational exchange, a sense of place and the contemporary metropolis. The exhibition showcases works by thirteen Nigerian and British Nigerian artists, bringing together sculpture, photography, sound and film.

The South London Gallery was established on its current site in 1891 to ‘bring art to the people of south London’. The Gallery’s emphasis is on presenting new work by British and international artists, often by those who have rarely or never had a solo show in a London institution.

Featuring around 50 international women and gender non-conforming artists, RE/SISTERS is a new exhibition featuring work from emerging and established artists across the fields of photography and film. Works in the exhibition explore how women’s understanding of our environment has often resisted the logic of capitalist economies which places the exploitation of the planet at its centre. They are presented alongside works of an activist nature that show how women are regularly at the forefront of advocating and caring for the planet. Reflecting on a range of themes, from extractive industries to the politics of care, RE/SISTERS explores environmental and gender justice as indivisible parts of a global struggle. It seeks to address existing power structures that threaten our increasingly precarious ecosystem.

    Time: 6:00pm till late

Location: Shoreditch Arts Club, 6 Redchurch Street, London E2 7DD

Daata invites you to a Frieze Week Party to celebrate the UK Premiere of Rosie Gibbens’s The New Me at the Shoreditch Arts Club. The New Me by Rosie Gibbens centres around an absurd, dystopian retro-futurist vision of consumerism, in which a corporation called Ilium manufactures and markets pointless products to bored consumers. The New Me consists of three video works, each a surreal advertisement for an Ilium product. Among them are a contraption for ‘increasing intimacy’ while brushing one’s teeth, an exercise machine that strokes the user’s face to evoke cat-like reactions, and a stylish outfit composed of sponges that facilitates housecleaning with the wearer’s full body. Ultimately, these products operate as self-parody as they fail in their promise to increase efficiency and enable multi-tasking.

The event will open with an in-conversation between Rosie and curator and collector, Marcelle Joseph and introduced by David Gryn, Director of Daata.

Also at 7.30pm Das Erste Mal. Artists First Videos & Films selected by Florian Meisenberg.
