Writer-in-Residence Programme 2026

Salzburger Kunstverein and ArtReview invite art writers and art critics to apply for the 2026 Writer-in-Residence program in Salzburg.

The month-long residency is conceived as a space for reflection, experimentation, and recharge. Writers are encouraged to explore the themes of Salzburger Kunstverein’s 2026 curatorial framework CAPTCHA Realism playfully and critically, immerse themselves in the exhibitions and the city, and develop a text that resonates with the year’s programme.

Each residency provides:

  • A private studio apartment located in the historic Künstlerhaus

  • A scholarship of EUR 900

  •  Health insurance

  • Editorial mentorship and networking opportunities

  • Access to a bicycle

Applicants should submit, in one combined PDF (in English):

  • A brief summary of relevant professional experience

  • A pitch of up to 300 words for a text engaging with SKV’s 2026 programme CAPTCHA Realism

  • One sample of recently published writing of max. 1000 words (article, review, exhibition text, or equivalent)

Please send applications to lederer@salzburger-kunstverein.at with the subject line “Writer-in-Residence 2026” by February 15th. In your email, indicate your availability to live in Salzburg for one full month between April and December 2026.

The selected writers will be announced by March 15th.

The jury consists of ArtReview editors Mark Rappolt & Fi Churchman, alongside Salzburger Kunstverein Director Mirela Baciak. Only successful applicants will be contacted.

Every writer will produce one text (format to be decided in discussion with the writer–in-residence) during the residency. Please note that texts are not guaranteed to be published by ArtReview. Publication is contingent on meeting the magazine’s editorial standards and will be assessed by the ArtReview editorial team (who will also assist writers to meet those standards should the need arise). Regardless of the outcome, SKV may facilitate alternative publication opportunities—such as inclusion in SKV’s magazine, catalogues, or other institutional formats. There is no expectation or pressure for the text to be published in ArtReview; the residency prioritises process, exploration, and intellectual fun.
