Curated by Ronald Sánchez (IKT Member)

For Anima, Animus, Miami-based multidisciplinary artist Carol Jazzar turns an architectural feature of the MDC Kendall Campus Art Gallery into the center of an immersive, site-specific installation.

Curated by IKT Member Ronald Sánchez, the exhibition takes its title from Jungian archetypes: the Anima, or feminine aspect of the male psyche, and the Animus, the masculine aspect of the female psyche.

Jazzar will construct an eight-foot-tall, sixteen-sided structure around the gallery’s central pillar. Visitors enter an interior covered with dried sea-grape leaves, conceived as a warm, enveloping feminine vessel. At its center, the existing pillar represents masculine aspiration and will be clad with reclaimed wood and kraft paper to evoke the trunk of a cabbage palm, Florida’s state tree.

Material choice is integral to the installation. Blanco Design + Build is providing drywall and timber on loan, with the materials scheduled to return to future building projects after the exhibition closes. The collaboration introduces sustainability into the work itself, extending Jazzar’s exploration of balance to relationships between culture and nature, creation and reuse. Research drawings accompanying the installation will offer another perspective on how the project developed from concept to physical environment.
